Love/Hate Relationship with Summertime
Alaskans cherish their summertime. After a winter of practically no daylight, we thrive on 24-7 light. Although technically the longest day of the year will fall on the summer solstice on June 21st, we already have 24-hours of daylight. The sun does go down, but it lingers just beneath the horizon and provides enough light to make it seem as if the sun never did set.
However, there is a down side to summer here. The excitement of every summer is dampered by forest fires. Currently, Fairbanks is surrounded by a ring of fire and according to the most recent situation report published by the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center, there are 85 active fires statewide at this time. We Alaskans sure could use some rain and prayers.
It’s ugly out there right now…
