2011 Arctic Expedition – ALMOST 100 BELOW!

Well, folks, it finally happened.  That unseasonably warm weather Joe was having on the expedition while the rest of the U.S. was struggling through blizzards and record-breaking cold has come to an end.

Earlier this week, Joe and the team got pinned down in a blizzard that blew in 14 inches of new snow!  Digging out camp once the weather has passed is quite a task!  As you can see from the photo below, everything literally gets buried.

After he spent a day digging out, Joe and the team were able to travel again.

Today, Joe reports that the temperature is –58 F and there’s a 15 mph breeze.  The National Weather Service’s windchill chart doesn’t even address temperatures below –45 F…

windchill

…so I plugged the numbers into the equation they use:

T (windchill) = 35.75+0.6215*(T)-35.75*(V^0.16)+0.4275*(T)*(V^0.16)

where T=temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and V=wind speed in mph

So, if T= –58 and V=15, their temperature up there today is…

-94 F

Brrrrr!!  Not to worry though, it’s in the Alaskan malamutes’ genes to thrive in these kinds of conditions.  They’re all doing great!  And Joe is comfortable as well.

And with that, I’m off to fix a hot cup of tea!  Winking smile

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

PS. Hope you are feeling well!

    • Hi Kit! I know…it was -30 here in Two Rivers this morning when I woke up and I was whining to myself about it because we’ve been having such nice weather here lately. After Joe called in and reported his temperatures, I’m not feeling so sorry for myself! :)

Had some hot spiced cider, got a blanket, still felt a chill thinking of all them !!! Have to ask, is the snow bump between the tent & sled handle a mal ?
    My 4 are belly up on their beds here, sissy’s ! L O L

    • Hi Brian! I believe that is a dog blanketed in snow between the tent and sled. Good eyes! :)
