Sally has been a top-notch mom to all her pups! I bet their nursing days are almost over, with their teeth coming in and all. But for now, they’ve got it made in the shade.

The puppies are starting to cut their teeth. They are getting pretty steady on their feet and before long they’ll be chasing Oskar and Melvin around the yard. Oskar met a few of the pups tonight. His eyes lit up when he saw them, but they weren’t quite as playful as he would like […]

We finally decided on a name for the little guy. Drum roll………Oskar! It’s Scandinavian, meaning “spear of the gods.” We selected this name in honor of Joe’s Scandinavian roots and our upcoming trip to Norway! Oskar’s adjusting very well to his new home and all his new doggie friends. He’s not sure what to think of […]

It’s not what you think. Our new pups didn’t grow THAT fast! This is a pup we got today from our longtime friend and fellow Malamute breeder, Roger Burggraf (kennel name=Taaralaste). Isn’t he just a cutie with that little black button nose? He and Melvin hit it off right away. They went straight into a game of tug-o-war! Okay, […]

The pups are starting to learn that waking up on a Saturday morning can be a real challenge. Fast asleep. So cozy! Starting to wake up. “Do we have to get up?” Streeeeetch! Good morning, sunshine!

It’s not every day you run into a ringneck pheasant around here, but today on my drive home from work that’s exactly what happened. The pheasant (and his lady, who unfortunately didn’t get captured on camera) were standing in the road at the turn-off to the house, so I ran inside, grabbed the camera, and snapped a […]

This little cutie got to spend some time relaxing on her favorite pillow to build up her strength. It doesn’t get much better than this! Then she decided to try taking a few steps. “I think I can…” And she did! And she was proud of herself. Can’t you just see the […]

Their eyes are finally open! The pups had a blast tonight seeing for the first time. They explored, they sang, they ventured onto the couch, they chewed on each other’s ears… “I see you!” “Do-Re-Mi-Fa…” A little bonding time… “I’m gonna steal your ear!” “Night-night.”

The pups are 2 weeks old today! They are getting really big and their eyes are almost open. In other news… The chickens are free-ranging this evening, and just moments ago Sally got loose! Amazingly, she didn’t go after them at all. She headed straight for the front door of the house, came in to […]

We had a great day of fly fishing today! We canoed a lengthy stretch of river and hit some excellent grayling holes. We were happy to see a bunch of salmon, too. It’s hard not to be in awe of a creature that swam 500 miles upstream, dodging bears and fish wheels along the way, and still has […]

Today, our freckle-nosed girl took a moment to skim Joe’s latest Mushing magazine article about the 2009 ANWR expedition. After getting this glimpse into her future, she took a little nappy and dreamed about all the fun she’ll have with the team when she gets older.

Once upon a time, there was a brave puppy who wanted to explore the Alaskan forest. He was just a little fella, but he craved a change of scenery. At first he seemed to enjoy it… Then he started sniffing around a bit… And realized he wasn’t near his mama! “MOM!!” So we […]

This little princess loves the finer things in life, like her arctic fox fur blanket. Sure, her mother has a great coat, but fox fur…oh, the luxury! And tell me, who could resist her lovely face? The only thing missing is her tiara.

It’s a tropical day in Two Rivers, Alaska…almost 90 degrees and way beyond our comfort zone. This little gal, with a delicate fireweed blossom behind her ear, is ready to hit the beach!

Tuckered out after another endless Alaskan summer day.

The new puppies wanted to introduce themselves! As you can see, they are in constant motion, like a perfect orchestra. Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony paired with visuals of wiggly puppies, strikes a cartoonish balance between innocence and orneriness that will personify their budding personalities in the coming days. You can just imagine what a handful they will be in a […]

The new Alaskan Malamute pups are doing very well! They are all strong and content snuggling with their fantastic mother. It’s amazing that even though they’re only 48 hours old and their eyes won’t be open until they’re two weeks old, that they squirm so much and feel their way around so well. Here are some photos Sally was […]

Overnight, Sally had three more pups for a grand total of nine!! Five white, three red, and one gray. Mommy and babies are all doing very well. We’ll be posting updates regularly, so please stay tuned! Good job, Sally!

YAY!!! Finally, Sally and Charlie’s new litter of pups are here! So far, she has six pups: two girls and four boys, and she may have more yet. Two of the pups are a beautiful red/sable color and the others are pure white. Mama is smiling and happy… …and lovey-dovey… …and the puppies are eating […]

We thought for sure we’d have news of new puppies by now. They were due on July 4th according to our calculations. Apparently biology disagrees. As Sally lies in her house awaiting her newborns, we are impatiently anticipating some new furry faces. C’mon Sally!

The Malamute of the Month for July is not a malamute at all. He’s our black lab, Melvin. Although he doesn’t run with the big boys, he is certainly worthy of recognition as an integral member of the Alaskan Arctic Expeditions team. We think of this guy as the team captain. Melvin is the ruler […]
